Strep pharyngitis is a bacterial throat infection caused by Group A Streptococcus - and it's one of the most common reasons children visit their GP. Key features include tonsillar exudates, tender anterior cervical lymphadenopathy, fever and no cough. Doctors use clinical tools like the Centor score and FeverPAIN criteria to decide whether antibiotics are needed - because if left untreated, it can lead to rheumatic fever, causing joint pain and even heart damage.
