Queen Elizabeth II's 70-year reign began not long before General Abdel Nasser became president of Egypt, and ended just months before the Arab world was due to host its first World Cup in Qatar – the 19th tournament to take place when she was queen.

While Elizabeth II visited Libya and Sudan in 1954 and 1965 respectively, it wasn’t until 1979 that she did her first state tour of the Arab world. The three-week trip saw her visit the six Gulf states: Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE and Bahrain.

According to a New York Times article on February 13, 1979, during the Gulf tour the Queen lived aboard the royal yacht Brittania. She not only visited local palaces, but also saw many of the projects planned or built with British help in an area to which British exports exceeded $4 billion in 1978. At the time, the six Gulf territories accounted for more than 5% of British export trade —more than Australia, New Zealand and Canada combined.

The Queen’s Gulf tour was also widely viewed as an attempt to bolster the resolve of the region’s monarchies, following the shock overthrow of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in nearby Iran. She would not travel to the Gulf again until 2010, when she visited the UAE and Oman.

Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday aged 96, the UK's longest-serving monarch.
