Serving the public, upholding the law and showing courage in the face of serious danger are values that define the best values of police officers in a democratic society.

Today we remember three remarkably courageous British Police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice on this day at Houndsditch in 1910. Other officers were also shot at the scene and suffered serious injuries.

The story of Sgt Bentley is especially harrowing since he never got to see his newly born son, who also tragically died a year later. This was a time before police radio and the National Health Service.

A sincere thank you to the City of London Police and all officers, staff and volunteers across the world who devote their lives to building safer communities.

Last year, our CEO Jurga Zilinskiene MBE was honoured to be invited by the Commissioner of the City of London Police to lay flowers at the memorial close to the scene of the murders.
