Deep Roots: Helping Sri Lankan Farmers Weather the Storm!

Sri Lanka's small farmers are the backbone of our food system, but climate change is making their lives harder than ever. Erratic weather patterns, with unpredictable droughts and floods, are disrupting planting seasons and reducing crop yields.

The good news? There's hope! Deep Roots, along with the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) and other UN organizations, are supporting a Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) Initiative in Sri Lanka.

Here's how CSA empowers our farmers:

Weather resilience: We're teaching farmers techniques like rainwater harvesting and water-efficient irrigation to cope with droughts and floods.

Smarter crops: We're introducing drought-resistant and flood-tolerant seed varieties to ensure better harvests even with changing weather patterns.

Financial security: We're connecting the farmers to markets nearby and helping them sell the produce quickly, so farmers aren't left empty-handed after a crop season.

Today, on International Women's Day, we honor the incredible women farmers who are the backbone of our agricultural communities. At Deep Roots, we recognize the vital role that women play in feeding our families, sustaining our communities, and stewarding our environment.

In many parts of the world, women farmers face unique challenges, from limited access to resources and education to the impacts of climate change. Yet, despite these obstacles, they demonstrate remarkable resilience, innovation, and determination in nurturing the land and providing for their families.

As we celebrate the achievements of women everywhere, let us also commit to supporting and empowering women farmers. Through our work at Deep Roots, we are dedicated to skilling women farmers in resilient, climate-smart farming techniques. Meet Manoradhi Rajkumar, a single mother who once felt lost and hopeless.
Abandoned by her husband, she struggled to provide for her two daughters, one a young child and another a teenager nearing adulthood. The economic crisis in Sri Lanka added another layer of hardship.

But amidst the darkness, a source of light emerged: Deep Roots.

Our Climate-smart nature farming training program, specifically designed for rural women like Manoradhi offered a lifeline.

Manoradhi’s testimonial is more than just words; it's a story of resilience and transformation. She learned to cultivate vegetables using natural methods- with locally available inputs, free from harmful chemicals and external inputs. This not only saved her money on groceries but also allowed her to provide her daughters with healthy, homegrown food.

"It was like the training was made for me!" she exclaims. Deep Roots empowered Manoradhi to become self-sufficient, turning- a small piece of land into a source of nourishment and hope.

This isn't just one story – it's a testament to the impact Deep Roots makes. By supporting women like Manoradhi, we're not just changing lives, we're building brighter futures.

Deep Roots shields farmers from the effects of El Nino by providing seeds that are tolerant to adverse climates such as extreme drought or flood, adopting eco-friendly farming practices that use locally available materials, and connecting communities with markets for immediate procurement of their produces.

We, at Deep Roots, aim to shield these vulnerable groups from the adverse effects of climate phenomena like El Niño by cultivating resilience in agriculture, empowering communities, addressing nutrition deficiency, and creating lasting positive change through environmentally friendly and sustainable agricultural methods.

In Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), heavy rains have submerged numerous villages in recent weeks, particularly in areas where Deep Roots implements Climate-smart agriculture projects. Despite these challenges, we stand united with the village elders, women, children, and beneficiaries. Your support matters.
