Our podcast guest today is Luce Mawdsley, a composer and guitarist based in Liverpool. Mawdsley’s practice is rooted in progressive experimentation and draws from an appreciation of all things Americana.

In March 2024, Luce released Northwest & Nebulous, an album inspired by the northern English landscape of their youth and draws from Mawdsley’s personal experiences as a neurodivergent non-binary composer.

Today's podcast features a conversation with the French-Spanish conceptual sound artist, composer and curator Lola de la Mata.

Lola’s practice evolved out of weaving, printmaking and Labanotation (a form of dance notation developed by Rudolf von Laban in the 1920s) and crosses over performance art, installation and sculpture.

In this interview, Lola talks about her upcoming album Oceans on Azimuth, which reflects on her experiences of tinnitus. Her new compositions feature sonic landscapes crafted from throbbing heartbeats and otoacoustic emissions reimagined through musical instruments made from metal, glass, ceramics and ice.

Today, Castles In Space is releasing A Loop Where Time Becomes, a compilation of archival recordings by Robin The Fog aka Howlround. It’s a retrospective of outtakes created between 2012 and 2017.

Howlround’s sound centres on manipulated field recordings that have been dubbed onto analogue tape. No outboard or digital effects are used. Instead, Howlround foregrounds the ‘natural’ quality of the tape loops themselves and the raw feedback of his reel-to-reel machines. A Loop Where Time Becomes documents Robin’s transition from the haunting ambient soundscapes that characterised his early work to the dark but swinging industrial techno of his later output.

Last year, we interviewed Robin about the Howlround project, his love of jungle and William Basinski, and his work for the British Library as an audio archivist.
