Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in response to the US attacks on Venezuela, called the military action worrying and “setting a dangerous precedent” and called on all parties to abide by international law, including the UN Charter. He stressed respect for national sovereignty and the need to avoid escalating tensions, but this was not a formal statement of condemnation but rather a form of criticism and an expression of serious concern. In addition to the Secretary-General’s remarks, a UN legal expert also condemned the US attacks as “illegal aggression” and “unauthorized acts of violence.”
