* AWESOME MECHANISM ALERT *
Recently, I stumbled across this absolute gem of a mechanism in a surgical device. It’s a lovely, elegant click-to-lock, click-to-return latching mechanism but there’s much more to it… The detail here in design for simplicity, design for low cost, design for high reliability and ease of manufacture are all off the charts. No pins, no linkages, no metal springs. Every single component has a different material specified to maximise function. The satisfying and utterly reliable snap, click and clunk of using this make it hard to believe it’s entirely crafted in plastic.
Whoever out there designed this - hats off to you. You did a fantastic job 👏🏻

- they really don’t make them like this anymore! Amazingly random (hand cut?) pattern, with each piece a lovely 3D object, still bearing band saw tooth marks. Hidden shapes in the pattern. No picture guide, so the image (whatever it is) is only revealed at the end. Brilliant!........
