That message from Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency is legitimate advice.

The key point is:

Only book driving tests through the official government website.
Do not use third-party apps, websites, Facebook groups, or people claiming they can “find faster test dates” for extra money.

A few important things from the current DVSA rules:

* You book through ** GOV.UK⁠ only**
* The booking service is available 6:00am – 11:40pm
* You can book up to 24 weeks ahead
* There is no official cancellation list or waiting list outside the GOV system
* Recent rule changes are aimed at stopping bots, scams, and resale of test slots

This warning usually means DVSA is cracking down on:

* unofficial cancellation apps
* people reselling test slots at inflated prices
* instructors or third parties booking improperly on behalf of learners

If you’re a driving instructor yourself (which I know you are), it’s worth reminding pupils:

“Please only use the official GOV.UK website to book and manage your driving test. Avoid third-party websites or anyone charging extra fees for test bookings.”

That keeps everything compliant with current DVSA rules.

And no, it’s not just to make your night-time drive a little bit more scenic or keep you awake with pretty lights. 😂

The colours of the reflective studs serve a genuine purpose and can really help you out when visibility is poor on unlit sections or in heavy fog.

Reflective road studs can be a lifesaver in fog and reduced visibility as they can give you vital extra information you might need to stay in bad weather.
Unfortunately the most common studs we see are the yellow ones sprinkled all along the many roadworks on our motorways and A-roads.

As well as the different colours, the raised studs also help give drivers an audible and sensory reminder not to drift out of their lane.
Rumble strips are used alongside them to do the same.

⚪️White studs mark the lanes or the middle of the road.

🔴 Red studs mark the left edge of the road.

🟡 Amber studs mark the central reservation of a dual carriageway or motorway.

🟢 Green studs mark the edge of the main carriageway at lay-bys and slip roads.

🟢🟡 Green/yellow studs indicate temporary adjustments to lane layouts,
e.g. where road works are taking place.

🔵 🔵 Blue emergency refuge areas / emergency access points.

If you think the cars using the lane next to you are being rude, stop for a second. They are not necessarily queue jumping. They may actually be doing exactly what the system was designed for.

Zip merging is not a surprise attack. It is not somebody trying to beat the queue. It is not a competition to see who can sit in one lane the longest.

It is simply a traffic management method designed to keep vehicles moving.

What zip merging actually means:

🚗 Use both lanes up to the point where they merge

🚗 Then take turns

🚗 One from the left

🚗 One from the right

Like a zip closing together.

The idea is to stop one huge queue stretching backwards while another lane sits empty like a forgotten parking space.

Why does it create so much frustration?

Many people feel moving over early is the polite thing to do. Then when another vehicle continues using the open lane, it can feel like somebody has unfairly pushed ahead.

That reaction is understandable.

The problem is that if everyone abandons one lane too early, queues become longer than they need to and traffic flow becomes less efficient.

Using both lanes can:

✅ Reduce queue lengths
✅ Improve traffic flow
✅ Reduce unnecessary stop start driving
✅ Lower congestion and frustration

The important part is not racing to the front. The important part is merging considerately and taking turns.

A zip only works when both sides work together.
