For years I thought my subjective assessment was great, until I realised it wasn't.

This realisation came when I moved out of full-time sport and started doing more work in private practice.

The questions I was asking as part of my subjective assessment were basic.

They were basically the questions out of the textbook...

The subjective assessment questions were those same questions you probably ask...

The same ones we were both taught to ask at Uni and on placements.

But they didn't give me the answers I needed.

The answers I need to make sense of my patient…

And specifically, the patients wants, needs and perceptions.

I learnt this the hard way...

And I'd advise you not to make the same mistakes!

Learn how to deliver a better subjective assessment in this week's podcast episode!

One of the biggest lies new grad physios believe.

That confidence comes before competence.

Every new grad seems to think it's just about time...

Doing the reps...

Getting the 'experience' that helps you improve as a physio...

That helps you get better results with your patients.

But it doesn't.

Confidence isn't something you're given.

It's something you earn.

Yes, some people are naturally more confident.

Their more outgoing, extrovert and on the surface more confident.

But under the surface, they feel just like you.

Like an imposter.

Confidence is built patient by patient.

Assessment by assessment.

Treatment by treatment.

Rehab plan by rehab plan.

Conversation by conversation.

But these things only help you progress, and build your confidence, if the results follow.

If you thought you nailed the assessment...

Gave the best treatment session ever...

And wrote a World class rehab programme...

This is great (and the aim by the way), but this means nothing...

If the patient's symptoms don't improve.

Don't judge yourself by how confident you feel.

Judge yourself by whether you're learning.

Every mistake is teaching you something.

Every difficult patient is building you into a better physio.

Every question you ask yourself is making you into a better clinician.

Providing you continue to learn...

From the errors and mistakes...

From what went well...

And keep doing your best to get more consistent patient results.

Get the results and confidence will follow.

Hope this helps.
