in 1973, the first mobile phone call was made by Motorola employee, Martin Cooper 📞

The call was made in New York where Martin decided to contact Joel Engel, his rival at his company’s competitor, Bell Laboratories. Eleven years later, it went on sale to the public under the name Motorola Dynatac 8000X. In 1984, the Dynatac, would cost you $3,995 - that’s approximately $11,700 or £9,500 today!

Don't be Fooled - it's Stress Awareness Month 🧠⚡

Since 1992, April has marked the start of Stress Awareness Month in the UK. According to the Mental Health Foundation, 74% of UK adults have felt so stressed that they felt overwhelmed or unable to cope.

People matter and that includes both our physical and mental health. If your people are not cared for, there will be knock-on effects to their lives, well-being, and commitment to their work, directly affecting your business.

What can you do to help beat stress?

⚡Talk about stress and its effects to reduce the stigma that is associated with stress by talking about the topic openly and freely with friends, family and colleagues.

As a owner and manager, if something is causing excessive stress at work, ensure to listen and allow open, honest discussion without concern of repercussion.

⚡Look after yourself! Take time out of your day to relax and get some fresh air. Don’t forget to exercise and eat well, even when you feel too stressed.

in 1984, TED, the hugely influential and positive non-profit media organisation was founded 🧠

"Ideas change everything" - this slogan is the backbone of TED and one we find very relatable.

TED started off talking about technology and design. It has since broadened to include scientific, cultural, political, humanitarian, and academic topics. We love to watch TED talks and have referenced a couple in our blogs.

Maybe Mark Woods will present one soon? What would the title be?

in 1919, Russ Lincoln Ackoff, the innovative systems thinker was born.

Disciple and friend of Dr. W Edwards Deming, Ackoff was an American organisational theorist, consultant, and Professor Emeritus of Management Science at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He was a pioneer in the field of operations research, systems thinking and management science.
