Where real food comes first Why is CFK important?

Today, one in five children and teens worldwide is overweight.

That’s more than just another statistic. It is a warning sign that kids’ diets and food environments have changed a lot in just one generation.

Over the past generation, the number of kids living with overweight or obesity has doubled globally. According to the World Health Organisation, adult obesity worldwide has more than doubled since 1990. Adolescent obesity has quadrupled in the same period.

This trend shows kids are growing up in places filled with ultra-processed foods that are cheap, easy to get, and heavily advertised.

If we want kids to be healthier, we have to build better food environments.
We can make a real difference. What you say and do matters.

What exactly is a child’s “food environment”?

It involves more than what children eat.
It covers all external factors that influence their dietary choices.

✔ What schools provide
✔ What foods are sold nearby
✔ What their families can afford
✔ The advertising they are exposed to
✔ The convenience and availability of foods

When unhealthy foods are less expensive, more visible, and heavily promoted, they become the default rather than the exception.

Understanding food environments shifts the conversation from individual responsibility to systemic change.
Children do not choose their environments; adults create them.

Be part of the change. Let’s change the story.

Big news for children’s health.

The government has announced plans to remove high sugar and deep fried foods from school menus and increase access to healthier options. Read the full article here https://www.gov.uk/government/news/government-scraps-high-sugar-food-from-school-menus?

This is a positive first step, and it reflects exactly what young people told us in our recent focus groups, where many highlighted school food as a barrier to eating well.

Although this is encouraging progress, families continue to face real challenges around ultra processed foods, and our mission remains as vital as ever. If you feel strongly about this issue and want to support a charity project whose mission is to help children and families turn away from ultra‑processed foods and choose real, natural foods for better health and wellbeing, we’re always looking for volunteers to join us.

Are we letting kids down with the foods around them?

Kids today are surrounded by foods designed to be tasty, cheap, and easy to find.

➡️ Snack ads pop up on every screen.
➡️ Sugary fizzy drinks are right at the checkout.
➡️ Ultra-processed foods show up in schools and neighbourhoods.

This brings up an important question:
Are kids really choosing these foods, or are the foods targeted at them?

When unhealthy choices are the easiest to get and the hardest to avoid, we can’t expect kids to take all the responsibility.

At CFK, we believe every child should have access to foods that help them grow up healthy and strong. Together, we can change the story.

Pastries are a nice treat, but they can leave kids feeling hungry again soon after.

A balanced breakfast with protein, fibre, and healthy fats helps kids maintain energy and stay focused throughout the morning.

Always remember that balance is important for children’s growth.

This puzzle has hidden words that show how proteins help your body.

Every child deserves a fair start in life, including a fair food environment.

Yet many children grow up surrounded by foods made for profit, not for nutrition:
• Ultra-processed products dominating retail spaces.
• Marketing targeted at young audiences.
• Healthy foods are often harder to find or cost more.

Food environments shape children’s preferences, habits, and health long before they can truly make their own choices.

Keeping children healthy is a team effort involving everyone, including healthcare workers, teachers, food producers, policymakers, businesses, and you.

At CFK, we work to create food environments that help children grow and thrive. We believe we all share the responsibility to protect children’s nutrition.

🍫 Breakfast bars can be convenient for busy parents, but it's always good to check the ingredient list.

Natural, real-food choices often give you:
• Fewer added ingredients.
• More natural nutrients.
• Longer-lasting fullness.

A few small changes can help you to enjoy both convenience and good nutrition.
