Concept and plan view for a new project in Wimbledon.

One of the challenges of garden design is creating visual connections with the architecture so the garden is part of the home and at the same time is richly alive, full of softness, movement, layers of scent, texture and colour. A space that connects with the natural world, the sky, the seasons.

In this example, I'm using linear paving which is paving cut into strips with gravel and plants in between and it's cut to different lengths and staggered. This gives us linear repetition, a rhythm that imparts structure and echoes the rectilinear architecture of the house and studio but at the same time it's alive - with elfin thyme, Corsican mint and Roman Chamomile inhabiting the gaps between the strips of paving.

If you draw a line connecting the edges you find they are asymmetrical and curved. So while this kind of paving embodies linearity, it's also curvy and very fluid and porous, repeatedly bringing planting into the centreline.
