How to protect yourself, your family and your business in some worst case scenarios.

The year 2020 has proven to be a rollercoaster ride with FTSE 100 falling from the years’ high of 7674 in January to as low as 4993 in March. This represents a reduction in value of 35% which on the face of it would send many investors in to panic mode, and even worse force them to sell out of their positions to cut their losses. For the investors that sold out at the bottom, they would probably be kicking themselves now as since then the FTSE 100 has been steadily climbing back up and surged above 6000 at the end of April and in May 2020 - an increase of c. 20% i.e. recovering more than half of the ‘paper loss’.
At Howard Worth our clients typically invest for the long term and we implement strategies that accounts for short term market volatility. By having a process and planning accordingly we can maintain composure and confidently guide our clients through stormy conditions. A big part of what Financial Planners do is behavioural coaching. This involves preventing clients from making irrational decisions and instilling them with good habits by way of education and mentorship. Resulting in investors being less likely to panic and sell low, and losing money unnecessarily.
For people or businesses looking to invest in the markets, broadly speaking I believe now is a good time as valuations are relatively cheap. For investors already in the markets then now is also a good time to review the suitability of your current investment portfolio/ strategy. In any case, I recommend speaking to a Financial Planner to put you on the right path and keep you there no matter what is happening in the world, economy or markets.
