Oberammergau
I was interested to read the origins of the Oberammergau
Passion Play. During the 30-year war (1618 - 1648 the bubonic plague swept across Europe. It arrived in erammergau from a workman, within 33 days 84 people had died. The villagers vowed that if they were spared further deaths, they would perform in perpetuity a play based on the last days of Jesus’ life.
The first play was performed in 1634. Now the theatre holds 4,700 people and the play is performed every ten years. Each year half a million people will stay in the village to see the play which last five hours. The Passion Play is significant because it reminds us where our hope in the end lies.
This year the play had to be cancelled but is hoped to be rescheduled for two years’ time.
We give think for the inspiration which led to the play first being performed and hope something of that spirit can be part of our lives during this Covid time.
Romans 6:8
Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.
Prayer
Loving God help us to draw strength from those in past who have been through difficult times and show have shown resilience and inspiration. Amen
Flat Battery
After an early morning swim, I returned to my car to find it
wouldn’t start. Mild panic set in... Would I make it back for the
first Zoom meeting of the day? Suddenly the day seemed out of my control as I wondered what would happen. Luckily on that morning things turned out well. The breakdown service arrived speedily and decided I needed a new battery there and then and so replaced it and I was home within the hour. I felt very grateful, and was so glad that things went so smoothly. Also the person who came was so helpful, and cheery. I thought about how good I might be at ‘patiently waiting’ which in this case wasn’t too long. But there was also a deep sense of how dependent our lives are on other people with different skills than what we have. We all need each other in different ways. The battery had run its life and was on
empty and maybe there is something for our spiritual lives: we can’t run on empty. How we do recognise when we are close to that point and what are the things that can refuel us and renew us.
The flat battery of my car made me think how I can’t run my life on a flat battery.
Isaiah 40:31
But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they
will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Prayer
Loving God thank you for those who come to me and help me when I need help, help me to be there
for others. Help me to recognise those times when my spiritual battery is flat – I turn to you for you
are my strength and renewer. Amen.
