Mention you’re heading to visit Carrs Pasties to anyone from Bolton, and you’ll get the same reaction as if you’d said you were heading to W***y Wonka’s chocolate factory. That’s the level of devotion these pasties inspire.
Carrs has been woven into Bolton life since 1938, when Nellie Carr started selling her homemade pasties from the tripe shop she ran with husband Joe on Halliwell Road. The tripe didn’t last, but the pasties did – queues of mill workers soon made their meat-and-potato the fuel of the local cotton industry.
Three generations on, brothers Joe, Liam and Matt Carr now run the business, which makes over four million pasties a year from its Manchester Road factory. Their golden, thin-crust classics now feed fans at Bolton Wanderers (they’ve got their own family stand at the stadium) and even Anfield.
While a curried pasty, a cheese-and-jalapeño number and a steak option have joined the line-up, the formula remains simple: locally sourced fillings, crisp pastry, and the kind of consistency that’s made them a North West staple - weddings, christenings, birthdays simply don’t happen in Bolton without a few Carrs Pasties on a trestle table.
You can grab one from their four Bolton shops – or even nationwide too these days.
