Sickle Cell Convos
Conversations about Sickle Cell Disorder. Talking about sickle cell disease from the angle of someone

It seems COVID is making a comeback. Please protect yourself especially if you're a sickle cell warrior.
Early presentation to hospital is very, very important in Sickle Cell. Unfortunately because sickle cell can affect anywhere that blood gets to in the body, which is everywhere, it means that sometimes some organs are affected and because the warrior does not present early to hospital, thinking that it is just a normal crisis that will resolve when they take care of it at home, by the time they eventually present to the hospital or their heamatologist, the issue is too far gone and in some cases, the warrior cannot be helped. The issue has either become permanent or even in some cases, life is lost either because the organs have been starved of oxygen for too long and the organs have packed up or some other reasons. Doctors can only help us if we present to hospital early, so please take this seriously.

It is very important that sickle cell warriors know the usual triggers for a sickle cell crisis, so that they can work hard towards avoiding the trigger leading to a crisis. There are so many things that can trigger a sickle cell crisis. To name a few; infection, stress, dehydration, malaria, high altitude, changes to weather and temperatures e.g extreme heat or extreme cold, surgeries and some medical procedures, e.t.c
Please ensure you're well educated about the possible triggers so you can be careful when exposed to them.

September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Personally I'm very happy to see how far sickle cell awareness has come, compared to how it was many years ago. More people now know about the condition. However we can never stop the awareness because people are still ignorant about the realities of living with the disease. People still wonder why we call it a disability, people wonder why we complain about the stigma and medical bias we encounter, and no matter how close someone is close to a warrior, they really can never fully understand the pain and internal struggles we battle with every single day. To warriors, our families and friends, please continue to spread the awareness. If you know anyone with sickle cell or work with someone with sickle cell, please be kind and extend grace to them. They are trying their best.
I cannot talk about sickle cell awareness without mentioning the good work that voluntary blood donation has done to me and all warriors who rely on regular blood exchanges. A big thank you to the wonderful blood donors who keep us going. If you can donate blood, please do and think about signing up today as each time you give, your blood can save up to three lives.
