Restraint is powerful.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately in relation to websites. They rarely become messy because someone made one bad decision. It’s usually the opposite. Every addition makes sense at the time. A new service. A clearer explanation. A page for this audience. A dropdown for that one.
Over time, though, the structure starts to blur.
Restraint in design is about hierarchy. Letting fewer elements carry more weight.
Restraint in copy is trusting that you don’t need to say everything you know in order to be taken seriously.
Restraint in structure is deciding who the site is actually for, instead of trying to accommodate everyone.
And restraint emotionally is probably the hardest part - not over-explaining, not justifying, not filling space because it feels uncomfortable to leave it empty.
Confident brands edit.
They don’t keep expanding. They decide what matters and remove what doesn’t.

I genuinely thought my days of joining online memberships were over.
I’ve been in a lot over the years. Some brilliant. Some… less so. And at some point I decided I didn’t need another online space. I already spend enough time online for my own work.
I thought what I wanted was more offline connection.
And then I joined The HoLT.
What changed my mind wasn’t features or content or ‘value stacking’. It was the feeling of it.
You can tell when something is built with integrity. When the person leading it isn’t doing it because it’s a clever way to scale, but because they genuinely care about the people in the room.
is there. Every day. Communicating. Responding. Involved.
You can feel the leadership in this space. There's a protectiveness to it.
Despite there being so many people in the HoLT, it doesn’t feel overwhelming. The quality of the conversations stands out. The expertise in the room stands out. It doesn’t have that frantic ‘I’m here to find clients’ energy. And it doesn’t feel like it’s built only for brand new businesses either.
Nearly nine years in, I’m not looking for start-up energy. I’m looking for thoughtful rooms. This feels like one.
Still early days for me, but I’m excited to explore the sessions properly and get to an in-person event too.
Turns out I didn’t want less online. I just wanted the right kind of space 🫶

**Coffee Morning for Self-Employed Women in Nottingham**
One of the things I miss most about my old London life is organising regular coffee mornings for self-employed women...
These mornings are a place to socialise & connect with like-minded women in a relaxed and informal setting, where we prioritise genuine relationships over business transactions. It's in this context that the most meaningful friendships, collaborations, partnerships and work relationships naturally develop over time.
Talk about marketing made easy, right? 😁
I'm so happy to be able to keep Coffee Club North London going, despite not being there anymore. None of this would have been possible without the help of the existing Coffee Club members who are taking turns to volunteer and host upcoming events. 💞
And to help me combat the FOMO I feel every month, I’ve decided to start a new coffee morning here in Nottingham! 🎉
So, if you're a self-employed woman wanting to meet like-minded people, mark your calendars and join us for the first Coffee Morning! ☕ It's a great way to connect with others and build meaningful relationships.
Tues Feb 20th at 9:30am in West Bridgford
