Did you know a refugee helped inspire Elphaba’s look in the ?

For , it was important to use micro braids for her character, Elphaba, to honour Black women.

For Marie Josée Mampuya-Yonda, who came to the UK as a Congolese refugee, the invitation to support a talented team of many working on the various intricate braids and wigs was a recognition of her dedication and hard work.

Marie Josée has mentored and supported other refugee women since opening her salon over 30 years ago, helping them build their lives and careers, and she's determined to continue giving back to the community that welcomed and supported her in North London.
