The latest Met Office report on climate change shows the heat is on for drainage and water supply networks + the response to subsidence. What was extreme weather in the 1990s is now the norm, it says.
This means to effectively assess and manage claims, insurance providers are going to need:
🔢 More, better and different data
🦌 Closer and more agile support from service providers to respond to extreme weather events
🏚️ A joined up approach to assessing the true impact of weather on drain and water networks, and the structures they support (think subsidence)
🧠 Access to more complex claims expertise
👩🏫 Plus training and knowledge sharing that helps their teams navigate a fast-changing claims environment
Plenty to get on with then!

The ongoing heatwave – the longest say some forecasters since 1976 – is telling us we need to do things differently:
🏚️ Subsidence surges are predicted to become more frequent
🌨️ Flash floods are likely to become more extreme
👍 The pressure will be on to tackle water leaks faster
Here at Catalyst, we’re already responding to these trends, driven largely by climate change:
🙋♀️ We’re recruiting more complex claims handlers
🗨️ We’re fully engaged in key organisations, like the Subsidence Forum
🔍 And we’re investing in data technology to deliver new insights our insurance clients need
We can’t just sit around getting hot under the collar!

Paul Duddle’s take home message from the Subsidence Forum Training Day was: “Join us.”
Paul is chairman of the forum and operations director at Catalyst.
He told delegates at the annual event to join the forum: “Together, we can build our skills and capabilities to tackle subsidence.”
Skills gaps were just what the training day was designed to fill.
Catalyst MD Brad Jackson says: “The opportunities to learn were impressive. In effect, the whole subsidence claims journey was laid out for us in detail.”
More volatile weather triggered by climate change is making subsidence more widespread and tackling it more of a challenge.
