⛽ 95 Octane or 99 Octane? Does it actually make a difference?

It's a question we're asked regularly, especially by customers considering a remap or performance upgrades.

The short answer?

Yes. It can make a significant difference.

Higher octane fuel is more resistant to knock, which allows the engine to safely run the ignition timing it was designed for. On many modern performance vehicles, this can mean smoother power delivery, better performance and more consistent results.

When we custom calibrate a vehicle using 99 octane fuel, that's the fuel the calibration is designed around.

If lower octane fuel is then used, the ECU may reduce timing to protect the engine, which can reduce performance and in some cases prevent the vehicle from achieving the figures it was originally tuned to produce.

For standard daily driving, the difference may not always be obvious.

For tuned and performance vehicles, fuel quality becomes much more important.

That's why we always recommend arriving with fresh 99 octane fuel before any dyno tuning or performance calibration work.

Power isn't just about bigger numbers.

It's about giving the engine the conditions it needs to perform safely and consistently.

Until it isn't.

This Mini Cooper S arrived on our dyno making 199bhp and 324Nm.

It left making:

199bhp → 254bhp
324Nm → 486Nm

That's a 28% increase in power and a 50% increase in torque.

Which, in something that weighs about as much as a decent-sized sandwich, makes a rather noticeable difference.

The thing with cars like this is that the numbers only tell half the story.

It's the way they drive afterwards.

Sharper.
Stronger.
More eager everywhere in the rev range.

No generic files.
No guesswork.

Just proper dyno calibration based on what the car is actually doing.
