When the pager goes off, everything stops.

Our volunteer crew could be at work, home, or out with their family, but the moment that pager sounds, they drop everything and run to the lifeboat.

No two rescues look the same, but every single time, our volunteers are ready 💙

🎥: RNLI Dunbar Lifeboats

[Visual description: The video starts with rescue footage of two crew members in yellow crew kit and red lifejackets running. Text on screen reads: 'Step 1: Run to the lifeboat'. The video transitions to the crew in a D class lifeboat in challenging sea conditions, with text on screen: 'Step 2: Launch and navigate to the casualty's last known position'. We then see the crew talking to each, with text on screen: 'Step 3: Scan the water for the casualty' and a second later the text on screen reads: 'Good news! The casualty has managed to get back to shore safely'. The final part of the video sees the crew in the lifeboat in choppy conditions, with text overlaid: 'Step 4: Head back to the lifeboat station', and then the D class lifeboat heads towards the harbour in the background.]

It's heating up again... and we know with warm weather, there is also an increase in accidental drownings.

Half of people who drown, didn't intend on being in the water in the first place.

So next time you hear someone say they don't like the water, remind them to :

1. Tilt your head back with your ears submerged
2. Relax and try to breathe normally
3. Move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat
4. It's OK if your legs sink, we all float differently
5. Once your breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety

Spread the word, it could save yours or someone else's life 💙

What you need to know about weever fish 🐟

Weever fish are a small fish that sit just under the surface of the sand. Their dorsal fin has three spikes 😱

If you stand on one, it might feel like you’ve cut your foot and a pin prick mark might be visible on your skin.

The longer you leave the sting without treatment, the more painful it gets. We recommend asking lifeguards for assistance as soon as possible.

We advise putting the stung area in a bucket of hot, not boiling, water (as hot as you can handle). This helps to neutralise the enzyme that causes your skin to react.

Within 10-15 minutes, the pain should ease but you might be left feeling bruised. You should be able to continue enjoying your day at the beach 🌊

[Visual description: A female lifeguard wearing a black and red lifeguard branded wetsuit, walks out of the sea towards the camera, she is holding a mini mic. The sky is blue and small waves ripple behind the lifeguard. An image of a weever fish appears on screen. Text on screen says ‘What you need to know about weever fish 🐟']

Come and take a look around our upgraded new beach lifeguard units 😍

Supporting our lifeguards' work and wellbeing on the beach, our new lifeguard units have been designed with all of our lifeguards' needs in mind.

Not only are they solar-powered, but they also have a strong structure, a purpose designed internal layout, private changing facilities, heated running water, better ventilation, improved solar glare and security.

Senior lifeguard, Cesar, said: ‘The new units are a big improvement. They’re watertight, the windows can open, and the inside stays properly weatherproof. Having a more reliable, efficient kettle is really helpful, especially when we’re treating weaver fish stings. The PA system’s better as well - it’s louder and clearer, so we can get important messages out to the public much more easily.’

Our lifeguards have been making your seaside safer since 2001. That’s 25 years of saving lives and preventing tragedies by sharing important safety advice to beachgoers and rescuing people in danger.

To celebrate this incredible milestone, each of the new 15 BLUs include YETI Europe coolers to help keep lifeguards’ food and drinks cold while on shift 💙

[Visual description: The video opens with lots of short video clips on screen that show one of our new beach lifeguard units being installed on the beach. It then goes into video clips giving you a tour around the inside of the beach lifeguard unit, first when it’s empty and then when it’s been filled. Text reads: Tour our new beach lifeguard units. Before it gets filled with the essential equipment our lifeguards need… The lookout window, the sink, the kettle, radios and PA systems, first aid kit and rescue tubes, hanging space for uniform, cooler boxes provided by YETI and more first aid supplies and equipment needed to help casualties.]
