Show Your Stripes Day is a simple but powerful way of demonstrating the reality of climate change.

Created by Professor Ed Hawkins, of the University of Reading, every stripe represents one year and the colours move from cool blues to warm reds to represent the increase in temperature seen over the last 150 years.

The image shows the latest stripes for Reading, up to 2025.

Last year was the second-warmest year on record in Reading, according to the University’s Atmospheric Observatory, and the driest for 20 years.

All five of Reading's warmest years have occurred since 2006, four of the five since 2020.

Come fly with us through the new Central library...

We opened the doors to the new library yesterday, and it will be open for business between 10am - 3pm this Saturday. If you're heading into town, why not pop in?

The ground floor houses the new children's library with a forest theme, which is more than twice as big as the previous space.

The teen area has age-appropriate books and graphic novels, shared study spaces and relaxed seating.

There is also a new community and events space called The Square, which has workspaces and can be hired for events.

Upstairs, you’ll find the local history library, study space and the Holybrook Room, which is used as a teaching and meeting space.

Browse our collection of thousands of fiction and non-fiction books or make use of our study spaces and electronic devices.
