A public enquiry into contaminated blood products infected with HIV and heptatis viruses given to people in the 1980s and 90s has opened. The enquiry is hearing from people whose lives have been devastated not just by these illnesses but, more than anything, by the stigma attached to them. Their stories are heartbreaking: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-48104413
By the mid-1980s, the products started to be heat-treated to kill the viruses and screening of blood products began in 1991. By the late 1990s, synthetic treatments for haemophilia became available, removing the infection risk.
Lives have been ruined - contaminated blood victims Those infected speak about their struggles as the public inquiry into the scandal begins.
