Why Motion is Lotion for Managing Chronic Pain and Inflammation
So much of the fitness advice out there says we need to lift heavy and train hard to get results.
And while that can be great for people without chronic conditions, it’s not always realistic—or helpful—when you're living with autoimmune issues or chronic pain.
In this episode, I talk about how movement can be a powerful step in the right direction… even if it’s gentle, even if it’s short, even if it looks different from what others are doing.
We’ll dive into:
– The truth about muscle loss after 30
– Why small steps can lead to big, sustainable change
– Making movement more accessible (and less intimidating)
– Understanding the different types of pain—and how to work with your body, not against it
– My “STRONG” approach to exercising with autoimmune conditions
Because sometimes just moving is a win—and motion really is lotion.
Special shout-out to and her Inspired Living with Autoimmunity podcast for the inspiration behind this episode. Julie is doing such amazing work in the autoimmune space.
If you're navigating chronic conditions and want a fresh, compassionate take on fitness, this one’s for you.

Many women over 50 are unhappy with their tummies! Comments such as “No matter what I do I just can’t get rid of the thickness in my waist” or “I am doing everything right and I just seem to be putting on weight.” While these are very valid complaints did you realise that belly fat or abdominal adiposity is a lot more serious than just a cosmetic issue?
Having a large tummy has been linked to metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, stroke, inflammation, increase cholesterol, osteoporosis, sarcopenia and even dementia.
Metabolic syndrome in turn has been linked to inflammation. Epidemiological studies, which look at rates of dis ease in populations, find that people who eat diets high in certain foods—fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fatty fish, nuts, and healthy oils (essentially the Mediterranean diet)—have lower rates of chronic conditions such as heart disease and cancer.
