Two athletes complete the exact same training session.

✅ Same drills.
✅ Same distance.
✅ Same pace.
✅ Same duration.

On paper, they did the same work. But afterwards...

🏃 Athlete A feels fresh and recovers quickly.
🥵 Athlete B feels exhausted, sore, sleeps poorly, and needs extra recovery.

So what changed?

External load = what the athlete did.
Think: distance, pace, jumps, accelerations, duration.

Internal load = how the athlete responded.
Think: heart rate, RPE, fatigue, soreness, recovery, sleep.

The external load was identical.
The internal load wasn’t.

That’s why we don’t just ask:
“How much work did they do?”

We ask:
“How much stress did that work create?”

Sleep, travel, current fitness, nutrition, previous training, psychological stress, and injury history can all change how an athlete responds to the same session.

Training doesn’t drive adaptation. The athlete’s response to training does.

Monitor both the work performed and the athlete’s response.

That’s how we make better decisions about performance, recovery, injury risk, and return to sport.

Same session. Different stress. Different adaptation.
