What an inspiring morning at Wolverhampton Grammar School!
We were delighted to welcome renowned space scientist, author and BBC The Sky at Night presenter Dame Dr Maggie Aderin to speak with over 500 WGS students as well as students from local schools.
Dame Dr Maggie shared her incredible journey into science, her passion for space and astronomy, and how being neurodiverse has shaped her career. Her message of believing in yourself left a lasting impression on everyone in the room.
We were also thrilled to welcome back Old Wulfrunian Jaipal (2024), now studying physics at the University of Birmingham, who joined us in support of the event. It was wonderful for our students to see a recent WGS leaver already pursuing a passion for physics at university.
A huge thank you to Dame Dr Maggie for inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators. 🚀✨Thank you also to Merchant Taylors' Company for gifting hundreds of copies of ‘Dr Maggie’s Grand Tour of the Solar System’ to children in attendance.

Activities Week gave our students an unforgettable insight into the psychology of crime and justice. From a live Zoom call with Lord Bruce in the House of Lords, to meeting PC Jones and a serving police dog, the week offered real‑world perspectives at every turn. They took part in a workshop with the team from HMP Brinsford, planned and acted out a full court case, met therapy animals used in prisoner rehabilitation, and explored real cells and real stories at Shrewsbury Prison. A powerful and eye‑opening experience for all involved.

Our Year 7s have had an unforgettable time on their residential at Oaker Wood. A brilliant few days of adventure and confidence‑building, and we’re so proud of how they embraced every challenge. What a way to round off their first senior year at WGS.
A wonderful celebration of storytelling, creativity and young readers, on Wednesday we hosted the Wolverhampton Children’s Book Award Ceremony in Big School, an Award established and solely run by Wolverhampton Grammar School for the past eight years.
Students from across the region joined us to honour this year’s shortlisted authors: Sophie Kirtley, M. G. Leonard, Onjali Q. Raúf and Piers Torday, whose books have inspired imagination, sparked discussion and left a lasting emotional impact on their readers. We were delighted to welcome Sophie and Piers in person, and to receive video messages from M. G. Leonard and Onjali.
Huge congratulations to Piers Torday, winner of the Wolverhampton Children’s Book Award 2025/26 for Tree Thing, a powerful and beautifully illustrated celebration of nature and hope.
Thank you to Authors Aloud UK and to all schools who joined us for this special event.
