🏫 Lucy Powell has been appointed as the new Education Secretary.
She was named Secretary of State for Education on 20 July 2026 by Prime Minister Andy Burnham, replacing Bridget Phillipson.
While leadership changes can feel distant from day-to-day recruitment, the priorities being discussed directly affect schools and the workforce:
👉Pressure on school budgets
👉The condition of school buildings
👉Ongoing debate over the high-pressure Ofsted system
👉Support for pupils with SEND and the staff who support them
As Powell takes over, unions and sector bodies are highlighting a recruitment and retention crisis driven by workload and wellbeing, with recent data showing record-low wellbeing scores for education staff and very high levels of workplace stress.
We want to hear from you: If you had 5 minutes with the new Education Secretary today, what’s the ONE thing you’d ask her to prioritise for schools and the education workforce?

We don't take messages like this for granted...
"The support from all staff at Educate has been excellent. From my very first enquiry and throughout the entire process.
Claire in the admin team supported me with great advice and encouraged me to stay positive at a very challenging time in my career. Mike the programme manager, added to this, by ensuring my application and documents were fast tracked to ensure the panel was able to swiftly move through the approval process.
Fiona, my assessor has been brilliant, her support, advice and professionalism has been exemplary and I feel so lucky to have had her as my assessor. Pushing me guiding and being the light at the end of a very dark tunnel for me.
A heartfelt thanks to everyone at Educate, my dream of becoming a qualified teacher would not have come to life without you all, especially not in less than 12 weeks."
