📢 Over one million people are experiencing poverty in Scotland.

One in four of the people in poverty are children.

Our latest report finds that the Scottish and UK governments are failing to use their powers to reduce poverty.

Our report also found 🔽

- Very deep poverty is growing in Scotland. The proportion of people in poverty living in very deep poverty has increased to 40% from 26% in the mid-90s.

- The basic rate of Universal Credit has fallen in real-terms and is well below the poverty line.

The standard allowance for a non-working single person falls 64% below the poverty line.

For those under-25, the gap is even wider at 75%.

- Families with a heightened risk of poverty are often reliant on social security:

95% of lone parents

62% of the families where someone is disabled

83% of those with 3 or more children - the two-child limit contributing to the very high poverty rates for these families.

❌ Our social security system is failing to provide the compassionate and effective support that many low-income families need. Listen to the voices of those who have experienced the system.

The UK and Scottish Governments must commit to work together to destigmatise the social security system and make it easier for people to access.

Social security is a vital investment in our people and a preventative and effective way of reducing poverty.

📢 All political parties must explain how they will urgently tackle hardship this .

The latest findings from our cost-of-living survey, out today, found the number of households going without essentials hasn't dropped below 7 million since May 2022. This is unacceptable.

Millions of low-income households are having to take drastic measures to cope with a crisis that is far from over.

-1.6 million households turned off their fridge or freezer

- 4.9 million households couldn’t replace worn out clothing

- 5 million households reduced showers

Meanwhile, party leaders remain silent on what they would do to address this in power. This should bring shame to a country as wealthy as ours.

🗳 Politicians must set out how they will bring an end to this relentless hardship. They need to tell us their immediate plan to help families who can’t afford life’s essentials - as well as their long-term strategy to tackle poverty.
