Every casting tells a story, but the real craftsmanship begins after it comes out of the mould.
Here are a few techniques and tools we use to clean up our castings, removing sprues, refining surfaces, and preparing each piece for the next stage of manufacture. It’s all about working efficiently while preserving every detail.

This has been a trusted workshop companion for generations of jewellers and for me, it’s been there from day one.
I’ve used borax as a flux every working day of my jewellery career. In fact, I’ve been using it ever since I started making jewellery in my parents’ garage at the age of 21.
Why do I still use it? Because it works.
Borax helps prevent oxidation during soldering, keeps metal surfaces clean, encourages solder to flow smoothly, and can help reduce firescale. It’s simple, reliable, inexpensive, and has stood the test of time.
Over the years I’ve tried plenty of different fluxes, but I always come back to borax. Sometimes the traditional methods are still the best.
Do you use borax, or do you use something else?
