AI generative art is a hot topic, with many artists saying you don’t need to be an artist to create convincing art with AI. I’d like to share my experiments with AI in an attempt to create an illustration for the book The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula LeGuin.

In the book, the cargo vehicles are described as big, bulky, quiet-running, barge-like electric trucks on caterpillar treads. The description is fairly vague, leaving a lot of room for interpretation.

I began by asking ChatGPT for the vehicle description (which, surprisingly, it knew!) and used the DALLE engine to generate an image. The result, however, was far from what I had in mind. So, I switched to Stylar and continued experimenting. After several iterations, I got closer to my vision, but the details—especially the functional parts—looked strange and not very practical.

I decided to refine the image using the Matte Painting technique, incorporating photo references to fix the machine details.

In total, it took me about 6 hours to create this image. While it’s far from perfect, the process was significantly faster than traditional drawing or creating a full 3D model. I’m still amazed by how much AI accelerates the creative process, though the artistic input remains essential for achieving a specific vision.

“Where the Esgalduin flowed and parted Neldoreth from Region, there rose in the midst of the forest a rocky hill, and the river ran at its feet. There they made the gates of the hall of Thingol, and they built a bridge of stone over the river, by which alone the gates could be entered. Beyond the gates wide passages ran down to high halls and chambers far below that were hewn in the living stone, so many and so great that the dwelling was named Menegroth, the Thousand Caves.”

I finally made it! I recreated my old concept art almost completely in 3D Blender.

The traditional Imeretian woman’s costume is a stunning display of color and craftsmanship. Originating from the western region of Georgia, this attire is known for its rich embroidery and vibrant hues. The Imeretian dress often features intricate patterns and delicate details, making it both beautiful and culturally significant.

The traditional costume typically includes a long, flowing dress with wide sleeves, a wide embroidered belt, and a headscarf, all adorned with beautiful designs that tell stories of the region’s heritage.
