Calvin’s Commentaries [Baker], on Psalms, p. 502), “It is marvelous [incredible], that, although many things distress us all, scarcely one in a hundred is so wise as to commit his life into God’s hand.”

**Meaning of Psalm 1**

Psalm 1 serves as an introduction to the entire Book of Psalms, providing a profound insight into the foundational principle of the righteous life versus the life of the wicked. The psalm contrasts the two ways in which humans can choose to live, offering clear imagery and guidance for the believer.

1. **The Blessings of the Righteous (Psalm 1:1-3)**

The psalm begins with a declaration of blessedness. The word "blessed" signifies happiness, joy, and fulfillment.

- **Separation from the Ungodly:** The first verse states: “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.” Here, the psalm emphasizes the importance of separating oneself from ungodly influences and behaviors. The righteous are careful about the company they keep, avoiding counsel that leads away from God.

- **Delighting in God's Law:** Verse 2 continues with, “But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” This reflects a deep appreciation for God’s word, leading to meditation on the Scriptures, which guides a believer's actions and thoughts. The essence of godliness is found in a heart that cherishes and ponders, finding joy in following God’s commandments.

- **Like a Tree Planted:** Verse 3 presents a vivid image: “And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” The analogy of a tree illustrates stability, nourishment, and fruitfulness. This signifies that a life anchored in God’s word bears good fruit, both in personal character and in life’s outcomes.

2. **The Fate of the Wicked (Psalm 1:4-5)**

The psalmist shifts to describe the contrast between the righteous and the wicked.

- **Stability of the Wicked:** Verse 4 describes the ungodly: “The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.” Unlike the righteous, whose roots grow deep, the wicked are unstable and easily blown away by circumstances.

- **Judgment of the Wicked:** Verse 5 states, “Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.” This warns that those who live in opposition to God will face judgment and will not have a place among the righteous in the end.

3. **Conclusion and Assurance (Psalm 1:6)**

The psalm concludes with the affirmation of God’s oversight and the contrasting destinies of the righteous and the wicked.

- **The Lord's Knowledge:** “For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.” This verse underscores the intimate relationship God has with the righteous. He knows their struggles and paths, promising guidance and protection.

In summary, Psalm 1 succinctly encapsulates two distinct paths: one leads to blessing and fulfillment through adherence to God’s word; the other lacks substance, ultimately culminating in judgment and loss. The righteous are rewarded with stability and prosperity, while the wicked are left vulnerable and facing destruction.

Believers are encouraged to reflect upon this psalm, to pursue righteousness diligently, embrace God's law with joy, and live in separation from unrighteousness, enjoying the blessings that flow from a life committed to God.
