Abdulai Kadiri, a mechanic at Prampram in the Greater Accra Region has killed his 9-month-old baby girl after 'feeding' her with acid. Kadiri's girlfriend, Doris Amatey had earlier refused to abort the pregnancy. It is reported that, three months into their relationship in 2020, Kadiri asked Doris to abort the pregnancy when he found out, but she refused. In further effort to get Doris to effect the abortion, Kadiri claimed he had paid a doctor at the Tema General Hospital, but his girlfriend still refused. Unhappy about Doris's refusal, Kadiri stopped visiting her, but he continued to support her financially for antenatal care. Kadiri did not attend his baby's naming ceremony but only sent Ghc350 and called Doris to give the name of the child as Muniratu Awudu. A day after the ceremony, Kadiri is said to have showed-up unexpectedly and carried the baby when she was crying. Doris then dashed to take a bath. While taking her bath, she heard a loud cry by the baby and rushed to the room, only to find the child in the hands of Kadiri with a discoloured mouth. When asked what had happened, Kadiri said the toddler was vomiting. Doris rushed the baby to the Prampram Polyclinic where it was detected that it had been given a corrosive substance believed to be acid which had burnt the cloth the baby was wrapped with. They were referred to the Tema General Hospital and later, the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, but died while on admission. Kadiri has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
