RELATIONSHIP 101: COMMITMENT

Nature has endowed every human being with a personal space and independence which is ruled by only that person. One needs permission to be able to access this personal space, both psychologically and physically.

By default, nature has entrusted the responsibility of wooing in the hand of the male species. It is therefore the duty of a man or a male species to convince a woman or a female species to allow him to break into her personal space. This process involves various stages of explaining to the will-be partner, the need to accept you as a boyfriend, husband or a partner by convenience. Once a lady accepts the love proposal of a man, it becomes the responsibility of both of them to work on the relationship to ensure it succeeds.

Letting a relationship survive the test of time is not a mere lip service. It involves hardwork and commitment. Being committed to a relationship means you are ready to go all length to see the relationship alive, and it is the duty of all the partners to be committed.

A person that is committed to a relationship will be ready to sacrifice, accept their weaknesses as well as that of their partner, and work on themselves to ensure that there is a continuity in their relationship. Commitment may take the form of time, money, attention, emotional support, as well as the exchange of any “commodity” accepted by both of you.

In the study of neural action, there is a term known as “either or none principle”. A neural action either begins and completes or it never starts at all. The same thing is applied to a relationship. You are either committed to the cause of the relationship or you are out of that relationship.

It is not advisable to play smart in a relationship. You can’t love the sweeter side of a person and “be running” from the sacrifice aspect of the relationship. Therefore, it is wrong to pretend to be in a relationship that you are not interested in committing to it. It is also wrong to be in a fixated relationship where your presence is based on the continual gratification of your personal need at the expense of your partner.

Romantic relationship is not business; it is a marathon, a project that needs long term and decisive commitments from both partners.
