Every stroke is unique, and so is the recovery journey. While some patients regain significant upper limb function, others face persistent challenges. Why is there such variability, even among patients with similar initial impairments?
In the first episode of Gheeks by the Fireside: Research Edition, Dr Raphael Takyi dives into the correlation between how the brain ages and post-stroke recovery.

We’re pleased to announce that Dr. Anthony Gyening-Yeboah has joined the G.H. Scientific team as Program Lead for Gheeks by the Fireside! 🥳
Anthony will curate our scientific conversations and lead the journal club discussions, bringing his deep expertise and passion for science communication to our community.
Dr. Anthony is a physician-scientist, cancer immunology researcher, and science communicator currently pursuing doctoral research at the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom. His research focuses on understanding the breast cancer tumour microenvironment among people of Black African descent.
His academic journey spans medicine, immunology, immunotherapy, bioethics, and public engagement. He holds master’s degrees in both Immunology & Immunotherapy and Bioethics, and has received international recognition for his contributions to research, including the USCAP Global Partner Award.
Beyond the laboratory and clinic, Anthony is passionate about making science accessible and meaningful to wider audiences. Through his scientific and creative pursuits, he seeks to bridge the gap between biomedical research, research ethics, and public understanding of science.
For those who already know Anthony, you’ll understand why we’re so excited to have him on the team. His passion for communicating complex science with clarity and purpose is admireable.
🔥 What is Gheeks by the Fireside?
Inspired by the Café Scientifique model, Gheeks by the Fireside is an informal gathering of researchers, professionals, students, and curious minds exploring science through conversation. Through our journal club discussions and featured research conversations, we create space to unpack scientific papers, discuss emerging discoveries, and connect research with real-world issues.
📅 The next session under Anthony’s leadership will take place on Friday 3rd July at 6:30 PM GMT on our usual Zoom link.

It’s football season. We understand the emotional battles we will all be experiencing. Science has an explanation. 👇🏾
The Black Stars Effect: A National Case Study in Emotional Resilience ⚽🇬🇭
Win or lose, millions keep showing up.
We celebrate together. We worry together. We ooooo and aaaaa together as We analyse every pass, every missed chance, and every goal. Yet no matter the result, we return for the next match with more vim and hope stil intact. 😀
Why 🤔 Psychology and neuroscience offer some clues.
Research suggests that supporting a team activates systems involved in identity, belonging, reward, anticipation, and emotional regulation. In many ways, football fandom provides a real-world example of resilience in action and the ability to recover from disappointment and continue believing in the possibility of success.
In theory, supporting the Black Stars may be one of Ghana’s longest-running experiments in resilience.
So the next time your heart rate goes up during a match, remember:
You are not just watching football.
You are experiencing psychology, neuroscience, and a masterclass in emotional resilience in real time. ⚽🧠
