REACHING CHILDREN OF SCHOOL GOING AGE (GIRLS) WITH COMPUTERS/LAPTOPS

Our story

Information Communication Technology (ICT) has become an important tool in today’s knowledge-based information society and economy. The role of ICT in an emerging economy such as Ghana’s, has been widely recognized at various levels. The recognition is reflected in actions such as the development and deployment of a national ICT infrastructure, institutional and regulatory framework for managing the sector, promoting the use of ICT in all sectors of the economy, implementing e-governance in all government institutions and the construction of a National Data Centre as well as Regional Innovation Centers.(PHC, 2010)

Information management tools such as desktop and laptop computers facilitate the accessibility and processing of information, including the use of the Internet, electronic mail and other services. According to the Population and Housing Census (2010), the total number of households in was 28,704. Out of 28,704 households, only 919 households, representing (3.2%) of all households in the district that have desktop/laptop computers. In relation to the s*x of the heads of the household there is a wide variation in the ownership of desktop/laptop computers. Among the male headed household only 4.3 percent owned desktop/laptop computers whilst 1.8 percent of female headed households have desktop/laptop computers.

As the adult population has low rate of possession of computers, the children of school going age will not be left out.
