Public Advisory: Pine Processionary Caterpillars Active on the Rock

The public is advised that pine processionary caterpillars are currently active and emerging on the Rock, presenting a potential risk to people and pets who come into contact with them.

The pine processionary caterpillar is a familiar annual sight, forming long lines as they leave their silken nests in pine trees during the transition from winter to spring. In recent years, warmer temperatures linked to climate change have caused these caterpillars to emerge earlier than previously observed, now as early as January rather than March or April. Climate change has also enabled the species to spread further north into parts of Europe, including northern France.

While the local pine processionary population has been reduced through ongoing management measures, including the use of tree collars to prevent caterpillar descent and pheromone traps to control moth populations, the risk remains. The microscopic hairs the caterpillars release can cause painful skin reactions and may be particularly harmful if ingested, posing a serious risk to children and pets, especially dogs.

Members of the public are advised to remain vigilant when outdoors, particularly near pine trees. Signs to watch for include silk nests in trees and caterpillars moving in lines on the ground.

Anyone who believes they or their pet may have come into contact with caterpillars should seek medical or veterinary attention immediately.
