🌍 World Environment Day

Today is a reminder that protecting our oceans and seas isn’t just about preserving marine life—it’s also about keeping our waterways safe for everyone who depends on them.

Over the last two days alone, we have recovered two abandoned fishing pots from the water. One of these pots had more than 30 metres of line floating on the surface, creating a significant hazard for passing vessels. Both pots contained a number of hermit crabs, which we carefully removed and rehomed before disposing of the gear responsibly.

Lost, abandoned, or discarded pots, traps, and fishing lines can continue to “ghost fish” for years, trapping crabs, fish, octopus, and other marine species long after they have been forgotten. Marine animals can become entangled, injured, or killed, while sensitive habitats may be damaged as abandoned gear moves across the seabed.

The impact doesn’t stop below the surface. Floating ropes and abandoned pots also pose a serious risk to boaters. Lines can foul propellers, damage engines, affect steering, and leave vessels stranded at sea, creating costly repairs and potentially dangerous situations for crews and passengers.

Our recent recoveries are a powerful reminder that every piece of abandoned gear removed from the water makes a difference. By reporting lost equipment, retrieving abandoned gear where it is safe to do so, and disposing of fishing materials responsibly, we can help protect both marine ecosystems and those who work and travel on the water.
