🌱 From Environmental Education to Community Action
What started as beach clean-ups, landfill visits and plastic education has led us to something much bigger.
This work began through our Circular Economy and Community Sustainability Project, supported by RedCentros, the European Union Interreg MAC 2021–2027 Programme, Gobierno de Canarias, Gesplan - Gestión y Planeamiento Territorial y Medioambiental, S.A. and our local project partners.
Through this work, disposable nappies became one of the waste issues we could not ignore.
We have now been working behind the scenes and have a partnership with SOS Children's Villages The Gambia, Kunning Gambia CBO, Gunjur VDC and the Public Health Team at Gunjur Health Centre to explore reintroducing reusable nappies as an affordable and environmentally friendly alternative.
We are excited to launch a 6-month pilot with 25 mothers.
If each family replaces just 4 disposable nappies per day, in just 6 months we could prevent 18,000 disposable nappies from entering the waste stream and help families save over GMD 216,000.
And that's with just 25 babies over six months.
Thank you to Rashawn, Team Leader of the visiting Columbia University Global Collaboratory group, for working with Kasim Theo Oxlade our community coordinator supporting recent discussions with the Public Health Team.
We look forward to sharing the journey.
