Wrapping up the 2025 activities of the Remote Sensing Lab, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens:
A productive year with diverse fieldwork projects across Greece, expanding our experience and technical know‑how in environments such as:
• Samaria Gorge (Crete isl.): Rockfall & flash‑flood protection surveys using UAS and TLS–LiDAR
• Santorini isl.: Rockfall mapping with UAS LiDAR
• Drama: Marble quarry documentation using TLS–LiDAR
• Attica: Coastal erosion monitoring with multi‑temporal photogrammetry
• Kea isl.: Cave mapping and 3D documentation with TLS–LiDAR
• Milos isl.: Coastal cliff rockfall assessment with multi‑temporal photogrammetry
• Grevena: Vegetation removal using UAS LiDAR to reveal archaeological features
• Zagoria: Landslide deformation monitoring with UAS LiDAR

On to 2026 — transferring this knowledge through our upcoming summer school. More details here: https://rslab.geol.uoa.gr/news_and_events/view_announcement/summer_school_2026

🔍 3D Mapping in Action – Inside the Heart of the Quarry

High-resolution terrestrial laser scanning was conducted inside an active marble quarry to capture structural features, discontinuities, and vein networks in unprecedented detail.
These datasets provide essential information for geotechnical analysis, structural integrity assessments, and digital archiving of this unique geological environment.

Monitoring Rockfall Risk in Santorini Island

During the last few weeks, the marine region NE of Santorini Island complex has experienced intense seismic activity, raising concerns about potential rockfalls in high-risk areas. Researchers of the Remote Sensing Lab of the .gr are working diligently to survey, map and assess these risks using cutting-edge technology.
To ensure high-detail and high-accuracy data collection during a multi-temporal study, we are deploying a high end Matrice 350 RTK UAS, equipped with a state-of-the-art L2 airborne sensor and a Phantom 4 RTK for higher detail facet recordings. This advanced system allows us to precisely scan and analyze the steep caldera terrain, helping to optimize risk mitigation measures and improve public safety.

-Our focus areas: Ammoudi, Armeni, Old Harbor, Athinios, and Korfou bay—identified by the as critical zones requiring higher scale observations.

-Our goal? To provide accurate geospatial data enhancing early rockfall detection and support targeted technical measures for safeguarding these highly touristic locations.

🌍 Field work at Samaria Gorge in Crete: A Project on Rockfall Risk and Safety Preparedness 🏞️

In October, our team from the Remote Sensing Laboratory at the .geology.nkua of the .gr conducted an in-depth investigation of the Samaria Gorge in Crete. This extraordinary landscape draws countless visitors each season, yet its steep cliffs and rugged terrain make rockfall a significant safety concern, especially after earthquakes and storm events.
Using Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), 360° cameras, and GNSS equipment, we mapped the 13km long pathway along the gorge and assessed high-risk rockfall areas within. Our goal? To provide precise, quantified data and actionable insights for local authorities, helping them make informed decisions for the implementation of effective safety measures before the next tourist season that begins next May.
This project underscores the vital role of close-range remote sensing as a useful tool for engineering geologists, in creating safer environments for both locals and visitors.
Special thanks to employees who made this exploration possible—we’re eager to see how our findings support enhanced safety in this incredible UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
