Between 1930 and 1960 the “artificial stone” plastering technique or “αρτιφισιέλ», as it is widely known in Greece (from the French term “pierre artificielle”), was extremely popular in the facades of multi-storey buildings, the so-called “polykatoikia”. Athens’ city centre exhibits a plethora of variations of this technique.
Apart from a well-prescribed mortar mix, highly skilled workers who chiseled patiently the facade were also an absolute prerequisite for the successful application of this finish.
Nowadays this “fashion” has vanished, along with the respective skills. In facade restorations, though, one should be cautious as mere redecoration (painting) of the surface is not the correct approach since it alters the original texture.
For more details of this construction technique one could look at the various publications of the Construction Techniques manuals, published between the 1950s and 1990s by the Eugenides Foundation for its vocational training academy.
