Investment Headlines Can Be Misleading
Investment numbers can improve on paper without signaling equally strong real-economy momentum. Recent UN data show a rebound in global foreign direct investment, but much of that increase was linked to financial-centre flows rather than broad-based productive expansion. This is an important reminder that capital volumes alone do not tell the full story. The deeper question is whether investment is creating real assets, jobs, infrastructure and productive capacity. In uncertain periods, quality matters just as much as quantity.
Fun fact: UNCTAD’s preliminary estimate shows global FDI rose 14% in 2025 to $1.6 trillion, but real investment activity remained fragile.
