Side bends can help bring balance to your entire body. They lengthen the abdominal muscles while improving spine flexibility.
Side bends also stretch the intercostal muscles (the muscles between the ribs) which can get short and tight from too much sitting and slouching. If these muscles are tight it can weaken your posture leading to neck and shoulder tension while also restricting breathing as it limits the range of movement in the ribs. Stretching out the intercostals will open your ribcage and lungs, while will improve your breathing capacity.
Additionally, side bends stretch the abdominal muscles and digestive organs. This aids and regulates digestion, elimination, and metabolism.
