Police investigations into the brutal killing of seven-year-old Aftab Mohamed and the attempted murder of his 72-year-old great-grandmother have reached a major breakthrough, with the main suspect allegedly confessing after being confronted with digital evidence linking him to the crime scene.

According to Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum, detectives presented the 23-year-old suspect with compelling digital evidence showing he was at the Zeelugt home at the time of the attack. Unable to deny his presence, the suspect reportedly admitted his involvement and provided investigators with details of the incident.

Investigators have since recovered a knife believed to have been used in the attack. The suspect allegedly identified the weapon and admitted using it to kill the child and attack the elderly woman.

Police also uncovered additional digital evidence linking the suspect to another nearby property before the attack. During questioning, he reportedly admitted entering a neighbouring yard but fled after hearing movement inside, leaving behind a pair of slippers and a music player, which investigators later recovered and which he allegedly identified as his own.

Detectives have also retrieved clothing believed to have been worn during the commission of the crime. The items, along with other evidence, will be submitted to the Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis.

The horrific incident occurred during the early morning hours of June 5, 2026, at Phase 3, Zeelugt New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo. Police say investigations are continuing and further updates will be provided.

ELEVEN GDF RANKS GRADUATE AS GRADE THREE MEDICAL ASSISTANTS

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Training Corps has graduated eleven Grade Three Medical Assistants following thirty weeks of intensive theoretical and practical training.

Drawn from various units across the Force, the ranks received instruction in a wide range of medical disciplines, including basic life support and first aid, human anatomy and physiology, clinical nursing, microbiology and diseases, pharmacology, internal medicine, and field sanitation.

The programme culminated with a practical attachment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where students were afforded the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a clinical environment.

The course was directed by Lieutenant Colonel Dr Nigel Langhorne and delivered by a team of experienced medical professionals drawn from a range of specialties.
The instructional staff included Senior Instructors Major Dr Shawn Legall and Dr Lequita Price who were also present at the graduation ceremony held on Friday, June 5, 2026.

Supporting the delivery of the programme were several members of the Force's medical services, whose expertise and practical experience contributed significantly to the training. Among them were Warrant Officer Class Two Seon Duncan, Staff Sergeants Ronic Carter and Shemicka Devonish, and Sergeant Gerelda Jeffery.

Chief Instructor Sergeant Nichola La Rose was supported by Assistant Instructors Sergeants Melisa Jhulu-Livan and Nickel Charles, as well as Corporals Rondell Garnett, Teneisha Cort, and Courtney Lewis.

Having successfully completed the course, the graduates are now equipped with the skills and competencies required to provide essential medical support within the GDF, whether serving at Base Medical Centres or deployed alongside operational units across the country.

Delivering the feature address, Commander of 3 Infantry Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Dominic Shepherd, commended the graduates for their dedication and perseverance throughout the demanding programme, while underscoring the vital role they will play in supporting the health, welfare, and operational readiness of their fellow soldiers.

โ€œYou have embraced the academic demands, mastered the practical skills, and demonstrated the professionalism required of those who will stand at the frontline of soldier care,โ€ he said. โ€œThese are not small achievements.

They represent the foundation of trust that your comrades will place in you. When a soldier is injured, ill, or vulnerable, it is you who will be called upon. Your training has prepared you not only to act, but to act with competence, calm, and compassion.โ€

Lt Col Shepherd further urged the graduates to uphold the standards instilled throughout their training as they assume their new responsibilities within the Force. โ€œAs you return to your units, whether to a Base Medical Centre or a deployed sub-unit, carry with you the discipline, humility, and sense of duty that this course has instilled.

Remember that your role is not merely technical. It is moral. It is human. It is essential to the operational effectiveness of the GDF,โ€ he charged.

Among the awardees, Lance Corporal Gadwell Grant of 3 Infantry Battalion was named Best Graduating Student and Best Student in Internal Medicine.

Lance Corporal Anastasha Ward of 1 Infantry Battalion received the awards for Runner-up Student and Best Student in Clinical Nursing, while Lance Corporal Aquil Williams of Base Camp Stephenson was recognised as Best Student in First Aid.

The Guyana Police Force has taken note of a Facebook Live video, which was later posted on social media today, Sunday June 7, 2026, featuring an individual known as โ€œMelly Mel,โ€ in relation to an ongoing murder and attempted murder investigation.

The Force categorically rejects the reckless and unfounded claims made in the video, including suggestions that the investigation is being covered up, manipulated, or that Detective Senior Superintendent M. Caesar, who is one of the senior investigators assisting with the matter, is engaged in any improper conduct.

This relentless campaign by this so-called Social Media Influencer against members of the Guyana Police Force is patently false, irresponsible and serve only to mislead the public, attack the character of a senior investigator and create unnecessary distrust at a time when investigators are actively working to ensure that justice is served.

Detective Senior Superintendent Caesar remains a senior and experienced investigator who was adjudged Best CoP of the Guyana Police Force on 2 occasions and was also the Runner-up *Top Caribbean Crime Fighter in the year 2017, has always executed his duties professionally and lawfully.

Therefore, any attempt to malign his character or undermine his role is strongly condemned.

The Guyana Police Force assures the public that this matter is being thoroughly investigated and all lawful lines of enquiry are being pursued.

Members of the public are urged to reject speculation, avoid spreading unverified claims and rely only on official updates from the Guyana Police Force.
