A common question asked is:
𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑯𝑰𝑽 𝒕𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒘?
The HIV testing window period is the time between a potential exposure to HIV and when a test can accurately detect the virus. During this period, a person may have HIV, but the test may not yet show a positive result.
Testing too early can lead to an inaccurate result, which is why timing matters. Most blood-based HIV testing services can detect HIV within a few weeks, while rapid and self-tests are most accurate after about 3 months.
If you think you may have been exposed within the last 72 hours, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) may help prevent HIV.
Knowing your status is an important step toward protecting your health and preventing onward transmission.
