Today we kicked off the Copernicus EU Training on Earth Observation and Disaster Risk Preparedness in Georgetown!
Hosted by the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) and funded by the European Union, this week-long workshop brings together 23 Guyanese agencies and regional partners to strengthen climate resilience.
Ambassador Luca Pierantoni was honoured to deliver the opening remarks at this important event, highlighting the European Unionβs continued commitment to supporting climate resilience, innovation, and disaster-preparedness efforts in Guyana and across the region.
The Director General of the Civil Defence Commission, Colonel Nazrul Hussain, welcomes the participants to the important Copernicus GIS Training and extends sincere appreciation to the facilitators and partners for supporting this initiative and for contributing to the strengthening of Guyanaβs disaster risk management capabilities.
He emphasises that the training comes at a critical time when the use of geospatial information systems and satellite-based technologies has become indispensable in disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and climate resilience planning. Across the world, GIS technology is transforming how agencies assess hazards, monitor vulnerable communities, coordinate emergency operations, and make informed decisions during crises.
