Chinese�The Chinese also came as indentured labourers and later moved into business. They contributed greatly to trade, supermarkets, and restaurants. Popular foods such as chow mein, fried rice, and Chinese-style cooking became a normal part of Guyanese cuisine. They also added to our celebrations, family values, and entrepreneurial spirit. Africans�The Africans were brought to Guyana during the period of slavery. After Emancipation, they played a major role in building villages, agriculture, and the development of the country. They contributed foods such as cook-up rice, metemgee, and fried plantain. Their rich culture gave us drumming, dance, storytelling, and strong religious traditions. East Indians�The East Indians came to Guyana as indentured labourers to work on the sugar plantations. They contributed rice cultivation, cattle rearing, and farming. Their foods include roti, dhal, curry, pholourie, and bara. They also brought clothing such as the sari and kurta, and festivals like Diwali and Phagwah (Holi), along with music and traditions that are now a major part of Guyanese culture. Portuguese�The Portuguese came mainly from Madeira as indentured workers but later became successful in business and trade. They helped develop commerce, shops, and bakeries.
