Samara Sukhai: Driven by Passion, Her Journey in Table Tennis
With continuous training and discipline, it is very much possible to achieve the extraordinary. For Samara Sukhai, a Grade 10 student of Queen’s College, table tennis has become the main platform where her years of dedication shine. The esteemed 15-year-old combines her 6 years of experience with the demands of extracurriculars, academics and leadership roles.
Samara was first introduced to the sport by her parents, who encouraged her to take up an extracurricular activity. Inspired by a young athlete, Chelsea Edghill, who was headlining the papers, her parents persuaded her to try the sport. Upon realising she had fallen in love with the sport, she grew into an exceptional player, becoming a former Caribbean champion and securing three titles. Additionally, she contributes to her team; she is a two-time winner at the Inter-Guyana Games and a local champion in both the Under-15 and Under-19 categories.
Beyond sports, Samara demonstrates strong leadership within Queen’s College. She has previously served as treasurer of the Aviation Club and STEM Club and currently holds the same position at the Austin (C) House. The athlete’s daily routine consists of early mornings spent at the gym and 3-4-hour practice sessions. By extension, she incorporates swimming, running, and even squash to continue building her endurance and speed.
Like many dedicated competitors, Samara faces her own challenges. Learning to accept her losses has helped her improve at table tennis and motivates her to keep improving her performance. Additionally, she mentioned an ongoing struggle of balancing academics with her intensive training hours. This often forces her to sacrifice social events and sometimes her free time to manage her work effectively.
Samara’s greatest source of inspiration stems from her love for table tennis and the pride of representing her country at the international level. Her passion drives her relentless pursuit of excellence as she sets her sights on the Caribbean Champion and Local Women’s Champion titles.
These goals will cement her among the region’s finest competitors. Her ultimate vision is to one day compete at the Olympic level, where her resilience and determination can shine against the world’s best. With her unwavering confidence and perseverance, along with the support of those around her, Samara’s journey is a powerful reminder that extraordinary dreams are within reach when determination is present.

PROJECT ELEVATE: MIND & BOOK TEAM-UP
The US Embassy in Georgetown selected Rhiann London and Bianca Skekel of Queen’s College as the 2025 Youth Ambassadors of Guyana – a distinguished role awarded to students who demonstrate strong leadership and commitment to national youth development. As part of this responsibility, they were tasked with designing and implementing a community-based initiative to make a meaningful impact. In March 2026, they successfully executed Project Elevate: Mind & Book Team-Up, a programme focused on holistic youth and family development.
The project's vision was to promote a Guyana where families function as supportive units by integrating literacy and wellness practices into daily life. Its mission is centred on empowering both parents and children through workshops that promote education, leadership, stress management, and healthy living.
Project Elevate targeted Grade 5 students who scored below 50% in Language and were accompanied by a parent or guardian. The initiative was carried out over four consecutive Saturdays in March (March 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th), from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Each session focused on a different developmental area.
Each session was designed dynamically to engage both students and parents. The first session focused on literacy development, blending baseline assessments with guided reading, vocabulary exploration, and writing exercises in a supportive environment.
The second session shifted to physical education and nutrition, where warm‑ups, exercise stations, and lively discussions on diet, hydration, sleep, and health linked active living to an improved focus.
The third session focused on mental health and leadership, with skits, teamwork challenges, mindfulness practices, and guidance for parents on emotional support and communication.
Finally, the closing ceremony celebrated participants’ efforts and provided Elevation Kits filled with resources to help families continue building on the skills and habits introduced throughout the programme.
A key feature of Project Elevate was the consistent involvement of parents in all sessions. This project was further supported by Mr. Jude Holder, Ms. Aaliyah Powers and Sarah Bahrally from the College. This approach aimed to strengthen the home environment by equipping families with practical tools to support learning, health, and overall development.
