The signs and symptoms of leptospirosis usually appear suddenly, about 5 to 14 days after infection. However, the incubation period can range from 2 to 30 days, according to the CDC.

Most people recover from phase 1 or mild leptospirosis within a week without treatment, but around 10 percent go on to develop severe leptospirosis.

Signs and symptoms of phase 2 or severe leptospirosis will appear a few days after mild leptospirosis symptoms have disappeared.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that affects animals as well as humans.

It is spread when the urine of rodents and other animals like dogs or cattle contaminates bodies of water. When humans get into contact with this water either by drinking or by way of an open wound they too become infected.

Those who are employed in sectors that require fieldwork or outdoor work and require contact with animals are at risk. Such occupations include veterinarians, farmers, sewer workers, fishermen and miners.
