Another week, another adventure

Welcome to Platform21, a place open to all educators who want to share experiences and meet new people from across Europe.

And that is exactly what we had in Split last week. A warm thank you to all the educators from ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ, ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ป, ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡น, ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท, and ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช who joined us!

May this be one of those weeks you will remember forever.

We had an amazing time, and having you with us was a life-changing experience! You were more than amazing, and we want to thank you all for filling the week with laughter, inspiring new ideas, and just being your best selves.

Until we meet again!

And remember, the only way to do it right is to do it POMALO.

Teachers TALK

Kate, an IB teacher from Austria is talking about the Austrian school system and how she started focusing on how the children are learning, instead of what are they learning about.

In order to reduce children getting stressed about the school, grades, and what they are learning, in her school they decided to talk about it with their students and including their opinion in the success criteria.

This makes the students happy, but at the end, you as a teacher are happier too.

What do you think about this approach?

Do you agree, or do you think students should not be included?

Let us know in the comments.

Every teacher has a teaching style. Some are chaos. Some are poetry. Some are pure improvisation.

So we asked our participants one simple question:

โ€œIf your teaching style were a movieโ€ฆ what would it be?โ€ ๐ŸŽฌ

The answers were honestly too good not to share.

Because teaching is never just โ€œa job.โ€
Itโ€™s energy, personality, creativity, patience, humour, and occasionally pretending everything is under control.

Now, itโ€™s your turn:
What movie best describes YOUR teaching style? ๐Ÿ‘‡

How to choose the right AI tool? ๐Ÿง

Choosing an AI tool is similar to choosing your favorite pen. You need to choose the one that works best for you.

These decisions can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming because, at the end of the day, AI tools are much more complicated than a pen. At Platform21, we want to help and guide you through a few simple and easy steps on how to choose the right AI tool for you.

First, and most importantly, try and test them. Notice which parts you navigate easily, and practice with the parts that confuse you.

It is important to vet every AI tool before using them. Think about it in three main domains: Usability, Ethics, and Pedagogy. This will keep your evaluation balanced and make sure you are using the right tool.

- Usability: Interface, features, limitations of a free version, logins.
- Ethics: What data does it collect? Age restrictions, data privacy, and the amount of hallucinations.
- Pedagogy: Does it support teaching and learning? Can you align it with the curriculum? Does it help you engage your students, etc.?

Once you have taken it all into account, here are a few more tips from our side:

1. Look for reviews and tutorials created by educators.
2. Use YouTube for short teacher demos.
3. Start small.
4. Note what worked and what was confusing.

And remember: REFLECT!
Reflection is an essential part of choosing and adjusting the AI to tailor to your needs.

Teachers TALK

Nuno, an English teacher from Portugal, is talking about the importance of gamification in the classroom.

Gamification encourages students to do extraordinary things in the classroom.

And if you are wondering how to do it, itโ€™s simple. It is about bringing game elements into an environment that is not a game, i.e., the classroom.

It is about giving your students the opportunity to take part in competitions. This means implementing teamwork and a set of missions that they need to complete in order to win.

In reality, they are not participating in a traditional game, but they do feel like it. As a teacher, you can add specific challenging elements to these experiences in order to boost motivation.

In the end, you naturally need a good reward system.
Why? Students collect points and can โ€œbuyโ€ something with them. For example: the answer to a question during an exam, completing homework during class so they have less to do at home, or finishing class five minutes early.

Would you try this kind of system yourself?

Iceland - a bucket-list, โ€œOut-of-This-Worldโ€ destination

This week has taught all of us a very important lesson: Iceland will always surprise you, even when you least expect it. In our case, it surprised us in the best possible way.

Between the extraordinary nature, cute puffins, and the best possible company, we fully enjoyed everything Iceland and Reykjavik have to offer. We had the opportunity to welcome more than 40 teachers from 13 different countries, and all we want to say is thank you. Thank you for your collaboration, for sharing insights, for discussing AI tools, and for striving to become the teacher you wish you had. You were all amazing, and this is a week we will remember for a lifetime.

We spent 7 days exploring Reykjavik, experiencing dramatic weather changes, taking in mesmerizing views, and discovering destinations that feel like nothing we have ever seen before.

Fun fact for anyone visiting Iceland during the summer: Summer here is very specific and nothing like summer in the Mediterranean. Make sure to bring both your sunglasses and your raincoat. Sometimes you will only need one, but other times you will need to use them both at the same time!

After all, it isnโ€™t called the Land of Ice and Fire for nothing. ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ˜ƒ
