No other city influenced Croatia as Venice. A milenium-long love–hate relationship ended when “Pax Europaea” finally reached Croatia. No wonder that the most famous Croatian design in Venice was a 16th-century sword, nicknamed “Schiavona”, upon Croatian marines, “Oltramarine”.

Now, the Zagreb Design Week is bringing an exhibition of Croatian contemporary design to the Venice Design Week. Made exclusively for this festival, Croatian Design X showcases a selection of ZGDW 2025 AWARD finalists. Started with the idea of promoting Croatian contemporary design abroad, Croatian Design X was already featured at the Romanian Design Week, the Melba Design Initiatives in Sofia and the Barcelona Design Week.

In the past decade, Croatian design has made significant progress, with Croatian designers receiving recognition from the world's most prestigious awards and working with renowned brands. Visual communication design is the strongest field of design due to lower production costs compared to industrial design, leading to more demand for branding, graphic, and packaging design. The main clients for industrial designers are furniture manufacturers, as Europe’s best oak grows in Croatia. Twenty exhibitors are being presented in Venice. From students to Croatia’s best agencies, it focuses on product design concepts, and it covers social innovation design, graphic design and exhibition design. The goal of this exhibition, is to present the best of Croatian design to Venetians and their guests.

Launched twelve years ago, Zagreb Design Week is the largest design event in Croatia and the region.
